Longevity : EI Weekend 3428
On longevity. How AI & other tech is helping fuel what could be a vast upswing in both lifespan and Healthspan.
Exchange Invest is a unique information resource combining the day’s stories in a newsletter for investors in exchanges/financial markets infrastructure.
Exchange Invest was founded by former exchange CEO and author of the first bestselling book of fintech (“Capital Market Revolution!” FT 1999), Patrick Young. Monday through Friday, our daily paid subscriber email discusses the business of bourses of all kinds across the world.
On this day in 1867, at NYSE, the Gold and Stock Telegraph Company granted the right to operate the first stock tickers between the boardroom and offices of members on an experimental basis.

MACRO THOUGHTS
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the global average life expectancy for a woman is 74 years and 68.9 for a man nowadays.
In 2024, there were a total of 722,000 centenarians among a global population of 8.2 billion.
Some fascinating developments, partly fuelled by AI and other modern technological marvels, show that — presuming the ‘bots don’t kill us all — the world record 122.45 years (122y, 164 days) of France’s Jeanne Calmont (1875–1997) could become the new norm within the next few decades.
Provided (a big ‘if’ naturally) telomeres and natural markers of aging can be better managed then it’s plausible to expect that within 20–30 years we can see humans not only enjoying a lifespan to 120 years but even enjoying a “healthspan” which means 120 ‘good’ years.

IN BIGWORLD
Perhaps unsurprisingly, as we all know testosterone-driven bravado cum risk management tends to get in the way of male longevity, men live shorter lives than women.
However it’s also striking to note at the ‘long end of the curve’ that the top 10 oldest women ever all lived longer than the oldest man.
Jeanne Calmont of France continues to top the longevity table at 122 years, 164 days while in tenth place is Chiyo Mitako of Japan died at 117 years, 81 days in 2018.
By comparison, Japan’s Jiroemon Kimura who passed away in 2013 remains the world’s oldest man at 116 years and 54 days.

The shift from lifespan to healthspan is crucial. Reaching 120 years only matters if those are functional years. The telomere managment research you mention could be transformative, but we also need paralel advances in cognitive preservation and metabolic health to make extended longevity meaningful rather than just prolonged decline.
